Do any of you have any recommendations on where to adopt a pet in New York City? I know there are probably hundreds but I am looking to adopt a cat and would like to find a place/support a place that is safe, clean and treats their animals right?
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
I would really appreciate some experienced New Yorker opinions on this… but im open to comments from anyone of course.
Thanks in advance! ![]()
I am not a New Yorker and from watching the animal cops on TV have pretty good feelings about the local SPCA. The North Shore Animal League also has a good reputation. I sent money to support a leukemia cat there who was being fostered until a home was found for him.
I think Ken’s suggestion is a good one. Certainly that shelter sounds as if it would be an excellent place to truly rescue a cat in need.
Recently my friends lhasa apso died. She has been really depressed and unsure of wether to get another pet(another pet like a small dog or maybe a cat) or just to stay away from other pets for a while. She feels bad about getting a pet because she feels like she will be betraying her old lhasa. I don’t really know what to tell her. Help?
I lost my cocker spaniel about a month ago. It can be pretty hard for a pet lover. I’ve never been with out a dog in my life. A lot of people say getting a puppy or a kitten is a good way to get over the loss of a pet.
Personally I really try to keep myself busy doing things like volunteering, things to go out of your way to do, things that aren’t just daily routine. I think getting your friend out and about would really help. I’ve been volunteering at our town library and elementary school for a childs reading program. Being around people and hearing how their day went, or their stories kept my mind away from thinkinng about it.
Another thing to telll your friend that I always remind myself of is that yes, its sad and its really hard to get on with out your best friend, some one who was constantly around you is suddenly gone. But think of all the happy times your dog brought you, all its little quarks, things that made you laugh. Because you should never let this one moment of sadness out-weigh all the great, fun moments. That dog brought a whole life of happiness and fulfillment into their life and that sad time is hard, but dont let it replace all that the dog brought.
Right now I’m waiting to get a dog, I’m trying to get accepted into post secondary and hopefully move out. I have a cat who I have a strong bond with and I totally understand what your friend means by sort of betraying her pets memory, I dont want to betray my cat’s bond with me by getting a new dog lol maybe thats silly. It’s okay though to be silly.
I think the best idea though – I dont have this option, small town
– maybe help her look into volunteering time at an animal shelter, walking dogs, spending time with the animals so they dont have to just sit in their kennels/cages. And hey, she might just make a connection with a critter there who could help her move on.
Its tough. You see that animal every day, morning to night and all of a sudden, they’re just gone. It’s stupid to just say get over it. You’re friends pretty lucky to have someone like you who cares enough to try and help & understand.
More specifically, whats in dog treats thats so different from regular dog food, and makes dogs freak over their treats? Why isnt this just added to regular dog food to make it more appealing to dogs, not that it really matters?
Nothing is different in most, they are cheaply made, most are very high in fat content and have very high ‘flavourings’ in them…not really good food for dogs, but because they are different and are given as a treat they become high value to the dog………….if you fed a bowl of treats a day, they would lose that high value and they certainly wouldn’t give the nutrients required, make your dog fat and un healthy
I have 2 healthy indoor cats. I want to get a 3rd cat from a shelter.
1. Which vaccinations should I give my current cats before getting the new cat?
2. How long should I wait after vaccinating my current cats before getting the new cat?
3. Should I test the cat TWICE for feline leukemia before I introduce it to my other cats? Or is ONE test good enough? I ask because if the new cat recently caught leukemia, it will not show up on the test yet.
It can depend on the shelter. Most pets put up for adoption have had the necessary tests to rule out contagious, fatal diseases they might have come in with. So just check that out.
You do not need to re-vaccinate your current cats. You will want to keep the new one separate for a while. Go to: http://www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe’s article titled "Cat to Cat Introductions" for great instructions about making the introduction. She also has an article titled "Vaccinations" which you should read to allay any issues you may have about the new cat bringing in "diseases" which may affect your other cats. Be aware that it is VERY common for a shelter cat to have an upper respiratory infection (airbourne and difficult to control in shelters) when you bring it home.
So keep the cats separate until you are sure that is cleared up or not going to develop. Aside from the viral infection stress adds a lot to getting the illness. The new cat and your cat will be under some stress until they have made their adjustment to one another.
You can also go to Dr. Hovfe’s site: http://spiritessence.com and read about using them with cats. Dr. Hovfe has a combination of essences called "New Beginnings". I feel a $20 bottle of that (mailed to you from CO) is a great investment to make when introducing a new cat to an established household.
Does anyone know the name of this doctor? His name was synonymous with respecting animals.
Bernhard Grzimek maybe? He was a zoo director in Germany, had many tv shows and published a number of books. I used to watch him on tv all the time…:-)
