Pet Adoption Centers in New York City?
30 Mar 2010
Do any of you have any recommendations on where to adopt a pet in New York City? I know there are probably hundreds but I am looking to adopt a cat and would like to find a place/support a place that is safe, clean and treats their animals right?
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
I would really appreciate some experienced New Yorker opinions on this… but im open to comments from anyone of course.
Thanks in advance! ![]()
I am not a New Yorker and from watching the animal cops on TV have pretty good feelings about the local SPCA. The North Shore Animal League also has a good reputation. I sent money to support a leukemia cat there who was being fostered until a home was found for him.
I think Ken’s suggestion is a good one. Certainly that shelter sounds as if it would be an excellent place to truly rescue a cat in need.

Hi
I am just wondering. I would rather get a cat from a not so great kill shelter where you will be rescuing one from a horrible life. They shoulkd still be healthy. The aspca off of the harlem rive drive would be a great place to save one.
Wherever you choose from, you’re a hero!

Hon, I live in Michigan but I’ve read GREAT things about North Shore Animal League which I believe is located on Long Island. They’re the former caretakers of the famous kitty, Scarlett, who saved her kittens from a burning building at great peril to herself.
Congratulations for being a wonderful human being who wants to give a kitty a good life!

Sadly, you can often find strays that have just been dumped in both Central Park and in Prospect Park.
I lived in NYC for almost two decades.
Here’s the link for the NYC Adoptions Calendar for the ASPCA:
